My first journey to Southeast Asia took place in 2005. I arrived in Thailand shortly after the devastating tsunami and I then decided to first travel north and then move on to Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia. .
Two years later on my second trip to Asia, I started in Hong Kong and via Guilin in China made my way back to the south of Thailand. Unfortunately, the film I shot about the river Li got destroyed and all images I had from that beautiful area therefore no longer exist.
In March 2016 I had the chance to revisit a lot of these places. Hong Kong, Thailand, Myanmar – eleven years later many things had changed. The most noticeable ones probably in Yangon, Myanmar. The formerly serene and laid-back city had developed into a never-ending traffic jam. The beautiful places are still there – the Shwedagon Pagoda for example – but it is much more difficult to get to them and once there, it is much more crowded then it used to be.
I am glad that I was able to enjoy the serene days of these countries back in 2005, but I of course also understand that the country and the people have to move forward. It will be interesting to see these changes and I certainly hope that the people can keep their identity along their way into the future. The different cultures are truly amazing and it would be sad if this diversity was lost.
